Edinburgh (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Èideann), the capital city of Scotland, has been described since the eighteenth century as the Athens of the North. We're not sure why, because Edinburgh blows Athens into the water in our opinion. The ancient Celtic hill fort is now the site of, perhaps, the most beautiful castle in Britain.

This label has been reproduced in collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland using Alexander Nasmyth's magnificent Edinburgh Castle and the Nor' Loch painted in 1824, before the North Loch was drained to make way for Princes Street Gardens and Waverley Station.
