Stirling (Scots Gaelic: Sruighlea) was for centuries the gateway to the highlands. Medieval maps depict Stirling and its castle as a geographical choke point. Surrounded by bog. Stirling sat upon on a narrow isthmus connecting the Scottish lowlands to the highlands. The western marshlands were drained in the 18th century to create the fertile Carse of Stirling we see today.
The Carse of Stirling by William York MacGregor (1855-1923) has been reproduced on our canvas label with permission of the National Galleries of Scotland
